Stage 3 – Bernex
Bernex, a steep but short climb!
A short but steep stage, stage 3 of La Grande Odyssée VVF put the harnesses to the test on this dry ascent of the Bernex Dent d’Oche special stage, in the Pays d’Evian Vallée d’Abondance. As the stage did not count towards the overall classification, it was not only for glory, but also to show his determination, that Norwegian Hans Lindahl, leader in the overall classification, set the fastest time, wearing the leader’s chasuble sponsored by Crédit Mutuel. He covered the 9 km and its 500 m vertical drop in 15’01, ahead of Spain’s Iker Ozkoidi and France’s Cindy Duport.
In the Nordic category, the hierarchy was respected, with Jean Combazard holding off his rival Philippe Desmurger, who was running with his faithful Magnus as lead dog.
This beautiful climb through the densely wooded Bernex Dent d’Oche ski area, with its snow-white fir trees, was an exceptional spectacle for the spectators who lined the slopes and could experience the race live, hearing the dogs panting in their effort. Only the ascent was timed, allowing the mushers to enjoy themselves on the descent.
The dog care of the day, sponsored by Royal Canin, was awarded to Gaël Brossette, whose first Grande Odyssée VVF. “His desire to learn how to take good care of his dogs during the race, his requests for advice on dog massage and his interest in everything to do with the race guided our choice,” explains Sandrine Van Parijs Pezard, Chief Veterinary Officer.
Today marks the end of the Haute-Savoie stages.
See you tomorrow in Savoie at La Toussuire-Le Corbier for the start of stage 4.
